DWELLING
Renovation
Twisted Midcentury Ranch
Golden Valley, Minnesota
It started with an art and sculpture studio addition to a 1950s ranch-style house, but morphed into a whole house renovation. The homeowners’ initial plan was to create a painting studio in which she could unwind after many hours of brain surgery, and a metal sculpting studio for him to explore his new digs on American soil after a life in the U.K.

A proposed angled addition to the house, with a monosloped vaulted roof and ceiling, excited the homeowners. But the detail that sealed the project was a large picture window that angled at the same slope as the ceiling and roof. The concept of such a contrasting addition inspired the homeowners to pursue a total house renovation, plus landscaping.
